الرقيب المتقاعد ويليام ماكوي
TSgt. William McCoy was born in Brooklyn, New York but spent very little time before moving. He grew up in the projects of Newark, New Jersey.
Early in life he would be influenced by his parents and sports, notably track and field. He was fascinated by the freedom of running and the freedom it provided. He was the oldest at home of 7 children. Growing up in the inner city it was a challenge to avoid negative influences such as crime and drugs. He saw family members succumb to those negative influences even though his father was a police officer. This drove him to want to get out of the environment. He would aim to excel at school in academics and athletics.
TSgt. McCoy would enter into a prestigious high school, 4 miles from where he lived, that focused heavily on academics and the arts. Arts High School would teach things such as art, music, and photography. At the high school he would join track, fencing, and become the president of athletics club.
After high school TSgt. McCoy would go to Seton Hall University with a track and field scholarship. After a while he would leave college and live in Trenton. In Trenton, he would work odd jobs before going to the College of New Jersey then called Trenton State College. During this time TSgt. McCoy would also enlist into the Air Force. While in the Air Force he would complete his degree in management.
When TSgt. McCoy enlisted, he wanted a job in the medical field, but he would be placed in the United States Air Force Tactical Air Control Party or TACP. He describes the job as air force infantrymen. During his time as a TACP he would learn how to use all the weapons of the US Army, escape and evasion, and survival. After 4 years in TACP he cross trained into recruiting services. He would spend 14 years as a recruiter. He prefers being a recruiter to being a TACP.
As a recruiter he would also get to meet some prominent people such as Oliver North during a commissioning ceremony.
After retiring from the Air Force TSgt. McCoy would work at Hudson City Savings, today known as M&T Bank, as a manager. He would work in the banking industry for 3 years before accepting a position as an AFJROTC instructor in the Bronx New York at Evander Childs Highschool. As an academy cadets wore their uniforms every day. Being an advocate for giving back to his community TSgt. McCoy wanted to work with young men and women to help guide them. In 2008 TSgt. McCoy would leave the Bronx and come to Dickinson High School. In 2017, he was named Teacher of the Year.
In 2023 after serving in the military for 21 years and teaching for 16 years TSgt. McCoy would decide to retire. He would spend his time in the Dominican Republic relaxing. When he was contacted by the principal though and informed that the AFJROTC program at Dickinson was in danger of closing he knew he had to return. And so in the 2025 school year TSgt. McCoy had returned much to the cadets delight.
